How does NCAAB betting work?

NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) basketball, also known as NCAAB or college basketball, is the basketball competition between colleges and universities in the US and Canada. The league is divided into three divisions (Division I, Division II, and Division III) based on a school's size, as well as conferences based on the geography and affiliation of the school.

NCAAB is where many great basketball players start their illustrious careers, as well as where teams experience the sweet taste of victory or bitter taste of defeat in dramatic fashion every season.

Apart from being one of the most passionately followed sports around the globe, college basketball is also one of the most popular sports to bet on, due to the large number of games played each season.

From mid-November to the end of March Madness, you can place bets on over 5,000 matches featuring over 350 teams with sportsbooks who offer a diverse selection of betting types and markets that provide numerous value opportunities.

What NCAAB odds can you get?

NCAA basketball provides excitement, fun, and adventure for fans and sports bettors throughout the college basketball season. The most popular NCAAB betting markets include:

  • Moneyline bets: The moneyline is a fundamental betting market in college basketball that allows bettors to predict which team will win the game outright.

  • Point spread bets: Point spread betting is a type of wagering in which bettors anticipate whether a team will win or lose a NCAAB match by a margin set by the sportsbook.

  • Total or over/under bets: Betting the total or over/under in a college basketball game means you are wagering on how many points will be scored overall, specifically whether the total will fall above or below a specified amount set by the sportsbook.

  • Parlays: A parlay is a bet that incorporates multiple wagers, which are combined for better odds. You can place a same-game NCAAB parlay (several selections on the same game) or a multi-NCAAB game parlay (several selections across different games).

  • Prop bets: Prop bets are popular during the college basketball season because they allow you to wager on nearly anything that could happen during a game. For instance, you can wager on a player prop and choose whether a player will get over or under a certain number of points, rebounds, blocks etc.

  • Futures: College basketball futures bets are exactly what they sound like. You are wagering on a long-term event, such as which team will win that year’s March Madness tournament.

NCAAB betting tips

Keep it simple

Given the sheer number of teams and conferences involved in NCAA basketball, it can be beneficial to choose a few different teams or conferences to follow and bet on those.

By narrowing your focus, you can learn more about certain teams and conferences on a game-by-game basis.

Do your research

You should always gather as much information as possible about both teams in a college basketball game before you bet on it.

Read up on their latest results and NCAAB stats, check to see if there is any betting trends, and follow the latest team news to find out if there will be key injuries or absences.

Get the best odds

Making wise bets on college basketball isn't always about picking the best team, but also choosing the best odds. Make sure you have access to multiple sportsbooks to shop for the best value.

Don’t forget that BET.CA has reviews of Canada’s top sportsbooks to help you build your stable of potential NCAAB betting sites.

Focus on form

Instead of judging a team based on their position in the rankings, pay more attention to their recent form, especially their last two or three games. Even the best teams can experience slumps, and losing teams might unexpectedly embark on a winning streak. Discover what's driving those recent results and whether those factors may apply to the game you wish to wager on.

Diversify your bets

Distribute your wagers and use various bet types to keep your options open.

If you’re struggling to get your NCAAB moneyline bets right, don’t forget that there are other markets such as the point spread that you can consider when selecting the best NCAAB bet for you.

NCAAB games today

In a traditional NCAA basketball season, each of the 358 teams in the 32 Division I conferences play 33 games in a regular season. However, under new rules implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, those rules changed.

Teams can play either 27 or 29 regular season games plus no more than four games in one multi-team tournament for a total maximum of 31. Conference and other postseason tournaments do not count against the limit.

Either way, it suffices to say that NCAA Division I basketball has one of the busiest schedules in sport, and there are up to dozens of games available to bet on daily during the season.

If that sounds like a tall order to follow, don’t worry as BET.CA will keep you up to date with all the latest scores and upcoming matchups in NCAAB throughout the college basketball season.
