How do CFL odds work?

The CFL has been part of Canada’s sports landscape for over a century. As the legislation of single-game betting is making it easier than ever to discover the excitement of sports betting in Canada, BET.CA is here to help you get the most of wagering on the country’s most popular football league.

Many different sportsbooks offer multiple different markets for every single game of the CFL season.

These include the moneyline, which enables you to bet on which team will emerge as the outright winner in a specific game.

You can also bet on a team’s margin of victory or defeat with the point spread, and how many points there will be in the game with the total or over/under.

If that isn’t enough, you can wager on just about anything not directly linked to the final result with CFL prop bets.

Popular CFL bets

There is no shortage of betting options for wagering on the CFL. As outlined below, in addition to standard options like the moneyline, point spread, and total or over/under, you can also place prop bets that cover all aspects of team and player performances. Futures betting and live betting are also both available for the CFL.

CFL moneyline odds

With moneyline betting, you can wager on which team will emerge as the outright winner in a CFL game, regardless of the final score. As with other sports and leagues, American moneyline odds list the favorite with negative odds (denoted by a - symbol before the number) and the underdog with positive odds (denoted by a + symbol before the number).

Here is an example of moneyline odds for a CFL game:

Team

Odds

Saskatchewan Roughriders

-180

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

+150

In the example above, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are listed as -180 favorites. This means a successful wager of $180 will have a profit of $100, for a total payout of $280. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are listed as +150 underdogs, meaning a successful $100 bet on them to win will produce winnings of $150, for a total payout of $250.

In addition to placing moneyline bets before kickoff, you can also wager in-play bets on the moneyline. In that instance, the odds will be dynamically updated in real time to reflect both the current scoreline and how long is left in the game.

CFL point spread odds

The point spread enables you to bet on how many points a team will win or lose a CFL game by. The spread acts as the equalizer between the strength of the two teams, and is determined by how many points the sportsbook thinks the favorite will win the game by.

The favorite is listed with a negative point spread, meaning they have to win the game by more points than the spread to cover it. The underdog is listed with a positive point spread, meaning they have to lose the game by fewer points than the margin (or win it outright) for point spread bets on them to win. Here is an example of point spread odds for a CFL game:

Team and spread

Odds

BC Lions, -4.5

-110

Ottawa Redbacks, +4.5

-110

In the example above, the BC Lions are favored to win the game by 4.5 points. That means if they win the game by five points or more, they will have covered the spread and produced a winning bet. Conversely, the Ottawa Redblacks must lose by four points or fewer for bets on them to win.

In this case, the odds for both teams are set at -110, meaning a successful $100 wager would produce $90.90 profit for a total payout of $190.90.

CFL total or over/under odds

Totals betting, also commonly known as over/under betting, focuses on whether the total number of points scored by both teams during a CFL game will be over or under the number set by the sportsbook prior to kickoff. Here is an example of total or over/under odds for a CFL game:

Total points

Odds

Over 56.5

-110

Under 56.5

-110

In the example above, the total has been set at 56.5. This means if the total number of points scored in the game is 57 or higher, bets on the over will cash in. Conversely, if the total finishes at 56 or fewer, the under will win. In this example, both the over and under have been priced at -110, meaning a successful $100 wager would produce $90.90 profit, for a total payout of $190.90.

One thing to bear in mind when betting on total or over/under markets for CFL games is that due to the nature of Canadian football, the totals are often set notably higher than in equivalent markets for the NFL.

CFL parlay odds

Parlay betting enables you to combine multiple CFL wagers in a single bet with enhanced odds. Parlays can focus on a single game or multiple fixtures, and can combine markets including the moneyline, point spread, and total or over/under. The catch is that every selection within your parlay must come in for your bet to win.

Here is an example of a parlay bet on three different CFL games:

Selection

Odds

Winnipeg Blue Bombers, +4.5

-110

Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Elks: Over 56.5 points

-110

Toronto Argonauts to beat Montreal Alouettes

+150

Three-way parlay odds

+811

In the example above, the three selections have been combined into a single parlay with odds of +811. This means a successful $100 parlay would produce $811 profit for a total payout of $911. By comparison, if the three selections were placed as individual $100 wagers, the total profit would come to just $331.80. In this case, a successful parlay bet would increase your profit by almost $500.

Parlay bets provide a straightforward way to boost your potential payouts on your CFL wagers, although they can be much harder to win, as only one selection needs to fail for your bet to lose.

Betting on CFL futures

CFL futures offer markets related to the performance of a player or team over the course of the entire season. If you’re convinced that the defending Grey Cup champions will lift the trophy once again, or a hot quarterback prospect will be awarded Most Outstanding Player, then you can bet on the variety of CFL futures many sportsbooks provide.

Popular CFL futures include the Grey Cup champion, East and West Divisions winners, and whether or not a certain team will make the playoffs. You can also bet on awards including Most Outstanding Player, Most Outstanding Canadian, and Most Outstanding Rookie. Some sportsbooks offer more specific futures, such as which quarterback will compete the most passes, or how many games a team will win that season.

CFL futures are unique to bet on as they are available both before and during the campaign, and their odds adjust throughout depending on how teams and players are getting on. This makes the timing of your bet important, as there are opportunities to take advantage of value in the odds. You can learn more about CFL futures with BET.CA.

CFL prop bets

CFL prop bets allow you to wager on just about anything that can happen in a CFL game not directly linked to the final result. Often, these are linked to statistical measurements for a team or player. For example, a sportsbook may post odds on a quarterback to throw for over or under a certain number of passing yards, or which team will get more interceptions or fumbles.

Due to their nature, the prop bets different sportsbooks offer for a CFL game will likely vary. Sportsbooks may also open up special prop markets as part of their in-play offerings. If a quarterback completed 10 passes in the opening two quarters, a sportsbook may open up a special prop market on them to complete over or under 19.5 passes in the game overall.

Prop bets can also involve head-to-head and/or event-specific markets. For instance, a sportsbook may offer odds on which team’s quarterback will compete the most passes, or which team will score the first touchdown of the game.
