How many teams will compete at the 2022 World Cup?

The 2022 World Cup will feature 32 teams, comprised of host nation Qatar and the 31 other countries that qualified. For the tournament, they will be divided into eight groups of four, from which two teams will progress from each group (16 overall) to contest the knockout stages. This edition of the World Cup will be the last to use this format, as starting with the 2026 World Cup the number of teams will be increased to 48.

Each continent and its respective soccer association is awarded a certain number of spots at the World Cup, in an attempt to fairly reflect each area of the world’s current respective soccer ability. For the 2022 World Cup, the number of teams competing from each continent are as follows:

  • Asia (AFC): 6

  • Africa (CAF): 5

  • Europe (UEFA): 13

  • North America (CONCACAF): 4

  • South America (CONEMBOL): 4

You can bet on each of the 32 teams at the 2022 World Cup across numerous futures markets, including the outright tournament winner, to win or qualify from their group, and markets for every game they play. These are often available to bet on both before and during the World Cup, with teams’ odds changing depending on their results and performances.

How many players are there in a World Cup team?

Soccer teams consist of 11 players: 10 outfield players and one goalkeeper. Outfield players can adopt a variety of different roles and positions, but are generally divided into three categories: defenders, midfielders and forwards.

Each nation competing at the 2022 World Cup will be allowed to select a final squad of 23 to 26 players for the tournament, which must include three goalkeepers. Notably, this is an increase from the 23-player squads used in previous tournaments. Usually, national team coaches will select a broad mix of players to cover all formations and eventualities over the course of a World Cup.

Unlike in regular soccer matches, where substitutes must be selected from the remainder of the squad not in the starting line-up, every player in the squad is permitted to play in every game. This means coaches will have up to 15 substitutes on the bench, from which they can use five substituted in no more than three windows during a match. If a match goes into extra time, coaches are also permitted one further substitute and window in which they can make substitutions.
