What is the College Football Playoff National Championship?

The College Football Playoff National Championship is the biggest game in the collegiate football season, and determines the NCAAF Division I champion for that year.

It started in its current form in 2014, having succeeded the BCS National Championship, which ran from 1999 to 2014.

The National Championship is contested between two finalists that emerge from the College Football Playoffs, with the game itself held on a predetermined neutral site. The winners are crowned national NCAAF Division I champions and receive the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy.

The game and the championship itself is the biggest honor in collegiate football, and is often watched by millions across Canada, the US, and beyond.

The Georgia Bulldogs won the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship, pulling off an upset by defeating No. 1 seed the Alabama Crimson Tide by 33 points to 18.

How can I bet on the College Football Playoff National Championship?

Betting on the College Football Playoff National Championship is no different to betting on regular season NCAAF action. Futures bets on the overall champion can be made throughout the campaign, while bets can also be made on props and correct matchup predictions.

The best value for futures betting is generally early in the NCAAF season, even before a game has been played, though fluctuations throughout the campaign can see futures odds change as the year progresses, depending on the performance of certain teams.

For instance, if your pick for the College Football Playoff National Championship is a notoriously slow starter, it may be prudent to wait until a couple of games into the season, after their odds may have lengthened. On the flip side, if you are expecting your team to run the table and go undefeated, it’s probably best to lock in your odds as early as possible before they plummet.

As for the game itself, all the usual football betting markets will be available. Moneyline markets offer the easiest way to bet on the final, while the point spread will level the playing field between the two teams involved. A host of props will also likely be available to give you the opportunity to bet on aspects of the game that are not directly related to the final result.

College Football Playoff National Championship betting tips

Do your research

Following your gut will only get you so far. Recent head-to-head records, current form, and player trends can all factor into your decision when it comes to placing your bet. Always make sure to back up your hunches with research featuring the latest NCAAF stats and previous results from the season where possible.

Timing is key

If you’re looking to place a futures bet, timing your wager right is key to getting the best value from the odds. If you’re backing a big preseason favorite, taking the odds early often gives you the best price that season. However, if your team is a slow starter or has early-season injuries to key players, it may be worth holding off and betting later.

Get the best odds

If you’re not taking the best odds available when you bet, you’re leaving money on the table.

Having accounts with more than one sportsbook will give you different options, and don’t forget that BET.CA also has NCAAF odds from Canada’s top sportsbooks.

Who is the College Football Playoff National Championship MVP?

The College Football Playoff National Championship game crowns two MVPs, one for the offense and one for the defense. This format has been used since 2006, with a single MVP award being given prior to this.

In last year’s National Championship game, both MVP awards went to Georgia Bulldogs players. The offensive MVP award was given to Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett, while Bulldogs’ safety Lewis Cine claimed the defensive MVP honor.

Bennett completed 17 of his 26 attempted passes for 224 yards and also threw two touchdown passes, while Cine’s strong defensive performance which registered seven tackles helped to restrict Alabama to scoring just nine points across the first three quarters.

Some sportsbooks offer markets for which players will win the MVP awards ahead of the National Championship game, and you can combine your predictions for both awards into one parlay bet.
