How do CFL standings work?

The CFL ranks teams in the East and West Divisions during the regular season with a point system. Teams are awarded two points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero for a loss. The CFL standings also provide a breakdown of each team’s record at home and on the road, the total number of points they have scored and allowed, their record against other teams in their division, and current streak.

In addition to keeping track of how the race for the playoffs is shaping up, this information provides sports bettors with a high-level snapshot of a team’s overall performance that season. While making betting decisions solely informed by the current standings is risky, they do provide a handy starting point when looking for value in CFL markets.

The following categories are typically included in CFL standings:

  • W: The number of matches a team has won.

  • L: The number of matches a team has lost.

  • T: The number of matches a team has tied.

  • PTS: How many points a team has earned that season.

  • PF: The total number of points a team has scored in their matches that season.

  • PA: The total number of points a team has allowed in their matches that season.

  • DIV: A team’s record against the other teams in their division.

  • HOME: A team’s record in their matches at their home arena.

  • AWAY: A team’s record in matches on the road.

  • STRK: The current number of consecutive wins or losses a team has. For instance, W4 means that a team has won its last four games, while L5 means that a team has lost its last five games.

CFL divisions

The CFL is comprised of nine teams, aligned into two divisions: East and West. The East Division features four teams: the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa Redblacks, and Toronto Argonauts. The West Division has five teams: the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The top two teams in each division qualify for the CFL playoffs, along with the two teams with the next best regular season record. That means it is possible for four teams from one division to make the playoffs, along with just two from the other. Under such circumstances, the crossover rule is put into effect, which means the fourth-place team that qualifies for the postseason would crossover to compete in the other division’s playoff bracket.

The top team in each division receives a bye to and home advantage for the Division Finals, while the two remaining teams in each division face off in the Division Semi-Finals. The two Division Semi-Finals winners progress to the Divisional Finals, and the two winners of those games then face off for the chance to win the Grey Cup and be crowned CFL champions.

What are CFL power rankings?

Every week throughout the CFL regular season, both the CFL itself and various other publications and websites publish power rankings. Unlike the CFL standings, which ranks teams based on how many points they have earned throughout the season, CFL power rankings rank every team in the league based on their recent performances.

A number of factors determine a team’s placing in the CFL power rankings. These include each team’s performance in their most recent game, the performance of a team’s top players, the overall performance of their offense and defense, and how each team has dealt with factors such as injuries and suspensions.

While power rankings have no bearing on the actual standings or whether a team will make the playoffs, they can provide you with insight into a team’s recent performances, strengths, and weaknesses. Such information can be easily useful for your CFL betting, especially if a team’s position in the division standings may not offer the full picture as to their recent form.
