What is the PGA Championship?

The PGA Championship is one of four majors on the PGA TOUR, which means it drives heavy betting traffic to the tournament each year. It is the second major on the schedule following the Masters, and will be played next at the Oak Hill Country Club in New York, US, from May 18 to 21, 2023. It has been held, with some exceptions, in each year since 1916, and awards winners the Wanamaker Trophy.

Unlike the Masters, it is played on various courses each year. As it is a major, it features the best players around the world, with the total purse reaching $15 million in 2022. The winner of the tournament receives a lifetime invitation to participate in all future PGA Championships, five-year allowances for participation in the three other majors, and points toward the PGA Player of the Year award and next Ryder Cup team.

The odds for the PGA Championship are often released months ahead of time, which allows for significant movement based on a golfer’s form and how they are playing in the tournaments leading up to the PGA Championship.

The main ways for golfers to qualify for the event is to have won a PGA Championship, won a major in the last five years, won a Players Championship in the last three years, be in the top 15 of the last PGA Championship, or receive a special invitation. Similarly to the other majors, the field consists of the best of the best, and therefore presents itself with exciting opportunities for bettors.

How can I bet on the PGA Championship?

Similarly to the other majors, the PGA Championship is open to bet on months in advance, and therefore the odds are ever-changing. You can place a wager on the outright winner, someone to make the cut, or place in the top 10, but in all cases shopping around for value and looking at form is the best way to go about it.

Wagering on the outright winner simply involves betting on a golfer to beat the field, and you can also bet on the player to win the day. These wagers come with the highest odds, meaning it’s common for golf bettors to select a combination of favorites and long shots to diversify their wagers.

Other markets include head-to-head odds, where you wager on one player to outperform another player on either a given round or throughout the entire tournament. Live and in-tournament bets are also available, as well as prop bets on interesting scenarios unrelated to the final result.

Where will the next PGA Championship be played?

The PGA Championship returns to the Oak Hill Country Club in 2023 for the first time since 2013, and only the third time since 2003.

One thing to look at when wagering on a golfer playing on a course like Oak Hill is the weather and climate swings in upstate New York in mid-May. The PGA Championship had been played in August prior to being shifted to May in 2018. This presents issues of a potential harsh or prolonged winter with the new date.

A good bet is that morning rounds will be cold, and the bent greens won’t be as quick as they are during the summer. Tee off times (morning or afternoon wave) could come into play if you were to wager on a specific player, as conditions might be easier for those teeing off later in the day.

Oak Hill is a 7,360-yard, par-70 course and has a compelling blend of short par 4s – both are potentially drivable depending on where the PGA of America sets the tees. This could help those who are long off the tee, thus giving you another sense of where you should be looking in the outright market.

Who won last year's PGA Championship?

Justin Thomas won the Wanamaker Trophy in 2022, soaring to a two-stroke victory on the final day over Francesco Molinari and Patrick Reed, who both made Sunday charges before finishing tied for second.

It was Thomas’ second trophy at just 29 years old, and he overcame a seven-shot deficit at Southern Hills to beat Will Zalatoris in the aggregate playoff. Thomas now has 15 PGA TOUR wins, including two major titles at the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championship, as well as the 2017 FedExCup.

No Canadian has ever won the PGA Championship.
